REASONS PIG FARMING WILL KEEP GROWING IN NIGERIA

There are a number of emerging market opportunities to be exploited by pig farmers in Nigeria.

Reasons Why Pig Business will Continue to Grow:

1. The Growth in Population and Income
The most recent population census reports the number of people in Nigeria currently at 180million therefore an increase in population is leading to increased demand for pork. Furthermore, the growing income level in Nigeria allows people to afford pork products, leading to increased demand, mostly of processed pork products.

2. Increasing Number of Pork Joints
Pork joints are a mushrooming sector that offers raw pork as well as ready to eat meat, in both cities and in rural areas. They also serve other cooked foods and beverages usually sold together with the barbecued or fried pork. Most pork joints sell more than 100kg (equivalent to about 2 pigs) per day and above 200kg over weekends. This eases access to pork products and makes the market for pigs easily accessible for farmers.

3. Development of Pork Processing and Trade
The increasing demand for processed pork products mostly by urban dwellers and export has led to the establishment of pork processing companies. Also, formal companies producing, purchasing pigs like ZULINKX AGRO & VET. SERVICES have been established to buy finished or matured pigs from farmers.  These firms offer good prices for quality pig farm products and offer support programmes like training to improve quality and quantity of pigs in the country

4. Development of Hotel and Retail Sectors
The growing tourism industry and expert community have attracted investments in the hotel and restaurant business. Accordingly, different new pork dishes and eating styles have emerged leading to increased demand for processed pork products, for example sausages, bacon etc. These are usually preferred by both foreigners and the growing Nigerian middle class. Supermarkets retailing pork products have also made it easy for different population classes to access the products.

5.More Investors
The quest for diversification, has made more people to invest in the pig industry.

6. NGO programmes
Pig farming has been supported by different Non Governmental Organizations as one of the sectors offering the best opportunities for poverty eradication in the country like the Tony Elumelu Foundation

HOW TO MANAGE THE SOW:PIG FARMING

⁣⁣⁣Female pigs chosen for breeding should be given special attention from the husband man if sows are expected to yield massively. Sows shouldn’t be allowed to grow too fat. When this happens, the affected sows will have leg and fertility problems. Allow all sows to get plenty exercise in order to stay fit, burn out excess fat and develop their legs well.⁣⁣⁣ Normally, young sows (gilts) are ready to conceive at 6 months of age, but mating them at this age is not advisable. They should be allowed to attain good weight before they are serviced. So wait until the gilts reach 8 – 10 months before they could be serviced. If gilts are serviced too early, there will be poor growth, small litters, farrowing (birth) problems and loss of conditions.⁣⁣⁣ Few weeks before servicing gilts or sows, they should be well-fed with protein-rich food or feed and extra quantities of feed should be provided. These make them fit and strong for mating, and allow the animals to produce more eggs for ferti...
